Support that Leads to Sucess

The Law School Student Success program at Creighton University is dedicated to providing the academic support law students need as they enter the enter the law school and beyond. For first-year (1L) students, the program includes seminars, coaching, writing support and a series of bar exam workshops. This academic support can help students successfully transition into law school, creating a solid foundation for their futures.

Seminars

A weekly one-hour, non-credit seminar is held during the first nine weeks of fall semester for all 1L students. If focuses on helping students with:

  • Time management
  • Test preparation
  • Mindset and anxiety
  • Notetaking and outlining
  • Test taking

Each session ends with a small group discussion—facilitated by the same second year (2L) mentors assigned at orientation.

Coaching

Two coaches are available to assist individual students with academic or personal challenges that may impact their ability to succeed. One coach is a seasoned law professor who specializes in law school academic skills and legal analysis. The other coach is a licensed mental health practitioner with expertise in helping students develop learning strategies, overcome academic anxiety and manage personal issues that could affect their studies.

Writing Support

In legal careers, strong writing skills are crucial. The Law School Student Success program wants to help new students hone those skills when they need to brush up on the basics of grammar and sentence structure. The program can facilitate referral-based writing support provided by the Department of English’s Writing Center.

Bar Exam Workshop Series

These workshops are offered to students throughout their educational experience to improve bar preparation, encourage and enhance learning for subject areas that need extra attention, and increase pass rates. This includes an early orientation to the bar exam in the 1L seminar, as well as the following:

  • Content review sessions
  • Diagnostic exams
  • Test-taking strategies
  • Practice tests
  • Study plan development
