Facilitating Exceptional Surgical Education and Research

Welcome to Surgery! At Creighton University School of Medicine, the Surgery Clerkship is a dynamic six-week experience designed to immerse 3rd-year medical students in the world of surgery. During this clerkship, students are assigned to two 3-week surgical rotations, where they will work closely with attending surgeons, residents, and interdisciplinary teams. These rotations provide students with hands-on experience in various surgical specialties, allowing them to develop critical skills in patient care, surgical procedures, and pre- and post-operative management. This clerkship is an essential part of the medical education journey, preparing students for the next step in their surgical training.

Each rotation will have specific goals and objectives. At the closure of the rotation, students will be able to demonstrate:

  • An appropriate surgical history and physical exam, develop a differential diagnosis and treatment plan for each patient while demonstrating effective clinical reasoning.
  • Knowledge of the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, differential diagnosis, diagnostic/laboratory tests (with interpretation) and development of a treatment plan of each surgical topic presented in the Core Curriculum.
  • Self-directed learning skills utilizing medical resources in the care of patients.
  • Effective communication with all members of the healthcare team and surgical patients.
  • Honesty and integrity in performance of all student responsibilities.
  • Awareness of comprehensive surgical care utilizing the team approach.
