Mission Statement

The Creighton Psychiatry Residency Program’s mission is to train our residents to become skillful, knowledgeable and compassionate clinicians, researchers, educators and administrators, who will find the utmost fulfillment in their work and make meaningful contributions to the field of psychiatry.

Program Aims

The Creighton Psychiatry Residency Program’s aims are to:

1. provide our residents with a comprehensive and broad-based education in clinical psychiatric diagnosis and treatment;
2. provide our residents with the skills to navigate and utilize a spectrum of services in community-based systems of care;
3. provide our residents with the skills to advocate for their patients at all levels– the individual patient, the hospital/clinic, the community, and the population;
4. promote patient safety, best practices for psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, and the willingness to continuously and objectively evaluate practices to improve quality of care for patients;
5. promote collaborative care of medical and psychiatric ailments and telepsychiatry to reduce access to care disparities;
6. promote habits of professionalism and ownership of life-long learning;
7. promote a scholarly approach to clinical, teaching, and research activities and provide role modeling, mentoring, and clinical skills that prepare our residents well for a future in psychiatry;
8. focus on resident educational needs over clinical service needs;
9. maintain a healthy, diverse and inclusive intellectual culture; and,
10. graduate ethical and critically thinking psychiatrists who are knowledgeable and competent in the biological, psychological and socio-cultural bases of psychiatry and are committed to serving a range of populations, including the underserved.
