Pharmacy Drug Information Residency

A Program Emphasizing Evidence-based Practice 

This one-year residency is designed to provide an intensive, rewarding experience in drug information practice while giving you the flexibility to pursue individual interest areas. You’ll also gain exposure to many practice settings through the Center for Drug Information and Evidence-based Practice at Creighton University. This residency is based in Omaha.  

Residency Program Details

  • The Omaha-based program begins on July 1 and ends on June 30  
  • Both postgraduate year one (PGY1) and year two (PGY2) residencies are available 
  • Residents will receive a $45,000 stipend as well as health benefits  
  • While the program does not have blocked rotations, residents will participate in teaching and education, research, and a variety of experiences with the Drug Information Consultation Service and Medication Policy/Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee  
  • At this time, the residency is NOT accredited by an accredited body; however, it generally follows the definitions and guidelines set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) 

Program Prerequisites 

  • Program applicants must hold a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited U.S. pharmacy program 
  • Previous pharmacy work experience (or a pharmacy residency) is preferred, but not required 
  • Applicants should be eligible for licensure in Nebraska

Note that applications submitted by February 1 will be given priority review and consideration for a remote interview. Applications submitted after February 1 will be considered on a rolling basis.

Key Residency Elements

To become a competent practitioner in drug information clinical practice, residents will participate in the day-to-day operations and management of the drug information consultation service. Specific responsibilities will include providing evidence-based drug information consultations to healthcare professionals and working with Doctor of Pharmacy rotation students. A strong understanding of literature evaluation and evidence-based practice principles is required for this experience. Residents will be expected to become proficient in evaluating and synthesizing large bodies of medical literature, complex medical decision making and providing clinical recommendations.   

Program residents will play a key role in supporting a pharmacy and therapeutics committee that interacts with affiliated institutions and other organizations. Residents will work independently, and with Doctor of Pharmacy rotation students, to develop and present formulary monographs, therapeutic class reviews and other medical policy activities.  

Teaching is a core component of the residency, which means each resident will: 

  • Receive an academic appointment as an Instructor of Pharmacy Practice  
  • Provide extensive advanced experiential training to Doctor of Pharmacy students during their required drug information rotations  
  • Teach in a didactic setting for courses including Literature Evaluation & Evidence-Based Practice 

Each resident will collaborate on research projects in the areas of clinical practice in drug information, scholarship of teaching and learning, meta-analysis and systematic reviews, and others. These projects will be conducted through the Center for Drug Information and Evidence-Based Practice. A resident must complete at least one research project suitable for publication during their residency.  

Residents must complete the following two certificate programs.  

  • Teaching Certificate: This program is designed to help develop foundational skills in curriculum development and teaching  
  • Evidence-Based Practice Certificate: In this program, residents will gain the fundamental knowledge required for evidence-based medical decision-making. Modules will cover biostatistics, hypothesis testing, research design, research protocol development, and systematic review and meta-analysis. 

Related opportunities, such as seminars on grant writing, leadership and research design, will be available throughout the residency. Participation in these programs will be dependent on availability and residents’ interests. 

Program Location

The drug information residency program is located in the Center for Drug Information and Evidence-based Practice at Creighton University in Omaha. This facility is located next to the school’s Dispensing and Patient Care Lab and Center for Medication Therapy Management.
