Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship

Creighton University School of Medicine – Phoenix’s fellowship program in Cardiovascular Disease is ready to welcome you to the desert southwest.

This three-year fellowship program is considered Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Currently, our program recruits for 4 positions each year.

Mission

Produce physicians embodying the Ignatian value of Cura Personalis who aspire to become transformative leaders in their practice, institution and community by emphasizing clinical and scholastic excellence, patient-centered care, life-long learning and wholesome development of the individual.

Program Aims

To train cardiology fellows with excellent clinical skills who can provide the highest quality cardiovascular care to patients across the region with a focus on clinical excellence, patient safety and delivering evidence-based medicine in a cost-effective manner. Our goal is to recruit and retain at least 50% of our trainees who will practice in the West. We hope to instill in our fellows knowledge-seeking skills that will enable them to critically analyze and embrace evidence-based medicine in the future.

This will be accomplished in part through didactic lectures on the fundamental principles relating to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and knowledge of the rationale for their selection and application to the routine practice of Cardiology. While it is important to understand the current Clinical Practice Guidelines it is equally important to understand the basis for their selection which will remain the pillars for future updates. The foundation for evidence-based medicine on which the CCPG Guidelines are based is first and foremost that of the randomized clinical trial. It is for this reason our fellows will be taught the relevant biostatistics underlying the design and interpretation of clinical trials. Every effort will be made to review the literature on which diagnosis and therapy are based for most cardiovascular disorders.

Our fellows will have extensive exposure to patients from diverse populations with common and rare cardiovascular disorders together with state-of-the-art tools and devices to enable the practice of evidence-based medicine. Our aim is to produce cardiologists who value scholarship and research as a tool to enable them to engage in life-long practice-based learning to apply new scientific knowledge to their patients and to guide future generations as teachers. The half-life of medical knowledge is just a few years and thus self-education through formal and informal programs is necessary. We encourage all our fellows to perform a scholarly activity such as a research project or publication of a scholarly review.
