Encuentro Dominicano Required Courses:
These courses offer a multi-disciplinary study of the history, sociology, politics, economics and religion of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. Classroom work is integrated with service-learning and cultural immersion in a context of ethical analyses and reflection.
Core Fulfillment: Integrations, Doing Social Science
A study of the history, sociology and politics of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, using data from multiple sources. Classroom work is integrated with service-learning and cultural immersion in a context of ethical analyses and reflection. This provides a supervised learning experience in a community learning site and is designed to integrate the knowledge, values, and skills presented in the classroom, as well as the individual research that the students will be performing, with the experiences in the community.
Core Fulfillment: Integrations, Intersections
A multi-disciplinary study of social justice issues pertaining to people experiencing material poverty. This course will combine Theological beliefs to make meaning out of the injustices in our world, with Economics views that address sustainable development ideas to eradicate extreme poverty. Classroom work is integrated with service-learning and cultural immersion in a context of ethical analyses and reflection. While addressing many of the social justice issues covered in this course from a global perspective, course work is designed to also bring a multi-disciplinary perspective to the exploration of the cultural, social, economic, political and religious aspects of life in the Dominican Republic.
Students will take three credits of intensive Spanish classes Monday - Thursday taught by a local Dominican professor. Students will be enrolled in the Spanish class best suited based on his/her previous and current language courses at University-level. Students will also take a written and oral placement test upon arrival in the Dominican Republic.
Students at the 300-level who are planning to participate in Encuentro Dominicano should NOT enroll in SPN313: Advanced Conversation on Omaha's campus. This course is strongly recommended in the Dominican Republic.
When necessary, independent studies are arranged to ensure students are enabled to grow in their Spanish-speaking ability.
Students who have not taken any Spanish courses at Creighton will take a placement exam online the semester before to determine his/her course level registration.

- Culture and Society through Cinema (transfers to Creighton as SPN 340 or ARH 199, 3CR) This course is offered through Creighton's partner university in Santiago, Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM*)
*PUCMM is a private, Roman Catholic, coeducational, university in the Dominican Republic with a campus located in Santiago, a short drive from the ILAC center. These courses are offered through the Department of Applied Linguistics through the Spanish for Foreigners section. Language of Instruction: Spanish, taught at an intermediate level to students for whom Spanish is not his/her native language.
