Grounded in our Catholic, Jesuit mission and founded in the College’s commitment to cura personalis (Latin for care for the whole person), the Haddix Ignatian Advising Program will deepen students’ capacity for personal growth and fulfillment in their major and future careers.

Through this comprehensive, four-year advising program, students will discern how best to use their individual gifts and talents as they grow during their time at Creighton and beyond. Central to the program is building relationships with each student’s advisor and expanding their network of mentorship through interactions with faculty, staff, college Jesuits, and alumni.

Pillars of Haddix Ignatian Advising Program

Our innovative Ratio Studiorum Program (RSP, Latin for plan of study) helps first-year students transition to college life at Creighton and assists them with their academic, personal, and professional development.  Each student participates in a year-long, 1-credit course, taught by a faculty member who will also serve as the student’s academic advisor until the student applies for their major.  In this course, students will gain foundational knowledge in Creighton’s mission and values, academic policies, and the Magis Core Curriculum.  Students will also explore majors and begin to create a four-year academic plan.

Building on the introductory experiences of their freshman year, the sophomore year of the program invites students to actively and intentionally engage in their academic journey at Creighton. All sophomores begin the year by meeting with their RSP advisor and classmates, to reflect on the past year and plan for the year ahead. Students then meet one-on-one with their RSP advisor to identify their academic, personal, and professional goals for the year and the resources they need to achieve them. Advisors and students continue to touch base throughout the year and students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences as they work towards their goals.

Through experiential learning opportunities, students continue through the discernment process and develop skills and competencies within their major field.  Academic departments provide career and graduate school advising to help students narrow their focus and build their resume. Students complete their junior year with a clear path for achieving their goal: turning their passion into their vocation.

With their major advisor and academic department, students focus on the practical skills needed for their next step.  Students develop their resumes, interview skills, and applications for entering the workforce or applying to graduate or professional school.  Additionally, students are provided with training in life skills, from managing finances to living out the Jesuit mission. Graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences will leave Creighton prepared to successfully live, learn, and work in our ever-changing world.

The discernment retreat was definitely a highlight of my sophomore advising because it allowed me to take a break from the stress of my busy school schedule and reexamine my future, my career choice, and what would ultimately make me happy. I think that the retreat reinforced my academic advising because it provided me with the opportunity to reflect and center myself around the Jesuit values as well as personal fulfillment.
