In 2021, Creighton opened the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Health Sciences Building to address Arizona’s healthcare worker shortage. Arizona’s Department of Health Services recognized this commitment to the state two years later by awarding $11.9 million to the University. $5.9 million is funding the Ignite Scholarships, which support students pursuing an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Creighton University’s College of Nursing.

This month, 43 Ignite Scholars will graduate at the ABSN Pinning Ceremony. Soon-to-be graduates Sam Flynn and Heena Timsina decided to pursue nursing careers after the pandemic.

Before starting the ABSN program, Illinois native Flynn spent five years teaching high school science. Although he no longer wanted to pursue a teaching career, he wanted to make the most of his science background. His experience during the pandemic inspired him to explore nursing, a way he could use his background to work directly for and with others.

“Nursing felt like the perfect fit for me, and Creighton nursing graduates’ high NCLEX pass rate is impressive,” says Flynn, “The Ignite Scholarship was instrumental in alleviating some of my fears and helping me focus on my new career path.”

Ignite Scholars commit to staying in Arizona for four years after graduation, and Flynn hopes to work in an intensive care unit.

Originally from Nepal, Heena, Timsina studied public health at Mississippi University for Women and the University of Arizona. After working as a clinical research coordinator at her alma mater, she decided to explore a new path.

“The pandemic served as a catalyst in my realization that I am deeply driven to make a meaningful impact in people's lives through direct, hands-on care,” says Timsina. “It was pivotal in clarifying my true passion for nursing, as it emphasized the crucial role of nurses in advocating for and supporting individuals in vulnerable situations.”

“The guidance and support I have received throughout this academic journey have been unwavering, underscoring the university's commitment towards its students' academic success and well-being.”

When she learned that Creighton’s nursing program ranks in the top 15 out of over 600 institutions in the country, Timsina knew the ABSN program was the right fit. Timsina’s experience of the unique community at Creighton was also impactful.

“The guidance and support I have received throughout this academic journey have been unwavering, underscoring the University's commitment towards its students' academic success and well-being,” says Timsina.

The Ignite Scholarship provided Timsina with the financial support needed to achieve her professional aspirations.

“The Ignite Scholarship eased financial pressure but also instilled confidence in me that I could achieve my educational and career goals,” says Timsina. “I look forward to utilizing my skills and dedication to enhance health outcomes and contribute effectively to healthcare.”

She hopes to pursue her nursing career in a medical surgical telemetry unit in Arizona. The Creighton University College of Nursing and the Ignite Scholarship are ensuring that Arizona’s growing population is equipped with the next generation of caring, driven nursing professionals.
