For the third consecutive year, a Creighton student placed in the top three at the BIG EAST Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium, held this year on March 16 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Over the symposium’s three-year existence, Creighton has been honored with four of the top nine awards.
The symposium coincides with the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Tournament, providing a platform for outstanding undergraduate research students from BIG EAST universities to present their research to panels of experts.
Creighton biology senior, Grace Jaworski, from Downers Grove, Illinois, took third place for her poster titled, “A Novel Interaction Between Proteins Involved in Nucleosome Assembly.”
"It was such a privilege to present my work at Madison Square Garden. I am so proud to be a Creighton student, and that pride grew exponentially with an opportunity to represent this school at a national level,” Grace says.
Grace was mentored by Lynne Margaret Dieckman, MS, PhD, who was instrumental in developing the undergrad’s research development and scientific presentation skills.
"Getting recognized with third place validates the exceptional quality of academic and personal development that Creighton offers to us students,” says Grace. “I am a product of my environment, and it feels so rewarding to be recognized for everything I have learned at Creighton."
Grace plans to attend graduate school this fall to work towards a PhD in human genetics. She believes her skills to communicate science clearly and effectively have greatly aided her scientific training and are setting her up for success in her future studies.
“Creighton has provided me with endless opportunities to present my research,” she says. “This symposium was my 13th presentation experience.”
