The Milton R. Abrahams Legal Clinic is the civil legal clinic at Creighton University School of Law. The Clinic is a hands-on training center for law students. It provides free legal assistance to eligible clients. Our office is similar to a legal aid agency, but the Clinic is staffed primarily by law students working under the supervision of licensed attorneys. All clinic clients agree to be represented by senior law students who are certified to practice law in Nebraska under attorney supervision.
Low-income, Douglas County residents with civil (non-criminal) legal issues are eligible for Clinic assistance. The Clinic uses the annual Federal Poverty Level Guidelines to determine income eligibility.
The Clinic accepts a wide variety of civil cases, including family law, landlord-tenant disputes, issues with Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) benefits, guardianships and conservatorships, simple probate matters, and contract disputes. The Clinic has special programs dedicated to clients who have experienced domestic violence and clients attempting to obtain or maintain healthy and affordable housing.
The civil Clinic does not practice in juvenile or immigration court and only Douglas County cases are accepted.
Intake applications are completed by student attorneys over the phone. Please call the Clinic at 402.280.3068 between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, to apply for services. Students do not make case acceptance decisions and cannot give legal advice over the phone. After you complete an intake application, you will receive written notice of case rejection or case acceptance within 7-10 days.
Please contact our office by phone or by email to clinic@creighton.edu if you require a special accommodation to access our services.
Yes. Clinic attorneys and law students will not respond to legal questions from non-clients over the phone or by email. All requests for legal advice or assistance should be directed to 402.280.3068 to complete an intake application.
The Clinic is located on Creighton’s campus at 2120 Cass Street. Our office is on the second floor of Creighton Law School in Room 232. The Clinic has a private entrance off of Cass Street marked by a blue “Creighton Legal Clinic” sign alongside a paved pathway leading to our exterior staircase. There is both free and metered parking along Cass Street or free visitor parking on the northeast corner of 24th & Cass.
The Clinic provides free legal services to its clients; however, clients are responsible for paying their own filing fees and other court costs and administrative expenses. The Clinic regularly assists clients in completing “in forma pauperis” fee waiver applications to reduce or eliminate court costs and fees.
