Students must successfully complete a substantial project. Students may fulfill this requirement by successfully completing any of the following courses:
- Advanced Trial Practice
- Arbitration/Trial Law Theory
- Milton R. Abrahams Legal Clinic
- Selected Externships*
- Selected Moot Court Competitions**
- Selected Research Topics (prior approval required)***
*Qualifying externships must be litigation focused. Qualifying externships include:

- District of Iowa-Council Bluffs, Iowa
- Douglas County Attorney’s Office
- Douglas County Court
- Douglas County District Court
- Douglas County Public Defender’s Office
- Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, Omaha
- Immigration Customs Enforcement
- Iowa Public Defender’s Office-Council Bluffs
- Legal Aid of Nebraska
- Omaha City Prosecutor’s Office
- Pottawattamie County Attorney’s Office
- Sarpy County Attorney’s Office
- Sarpy County Court
- United States Attorney’s Office-Omaha
- United States Attorney’s Office-Council Bluffs
- United States District Court of Nebraska-Omaha
- United States Magistrate’s Court-Omaha
**In order for students to receive credit for the substantial project, the student must actively participate in the writing of an appellate brief. The following moot court competitions qualify:
- National Moot Court Competition
- National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition
- Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition
- Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition
- Externships or moot court experiences not listed above, but approved in advance, may satisfy the substantial project requirement. A student seeking such approval must submit a written request to the law school’s registrar in advance of completing the externship or moot court experience.
