Research Focus

Our laboratory focuses on many aspects of antibiotic resistance and the pathogenesis of urinary tract infections caused by E. coli. Our research explores the molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, both chromosomal and plasmid-mediated, in gram-negative pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Specifically, we are interested in the identification of selective pressures required for the emergence of resistance, the regulation of gene and protein expression involved in resistant phenotypes, and metabolic pathways required for both pathogenesis and antibiotic tolerance in Enterobacterales. In addition, we are interested in the development of diagnostic assays to detect not only the phenotype of organisms resistant to antibiotics but the mechanisms by which the organism becomes resistant.
