Assistant Professor - Philosophy

Description

The Department of Philosophy at Creighton University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy specializing in African or Africana Philosophy, Indian Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, Latin American Philosophy, or Native American Philosophy. The candidate will be expected to teach three courses each semester. The candidate will have opportunities to regularly teach an upper-level course for philosophy majors in the history of the philosophical tradition in which the applicant specializes. The successful applicant should also have teaching competence in the Philosophy of Feminism, the Philosophy of Religion, or the Philosophy of Technology.

The position, which begins in August 2025, is part of a cluster hire across the College of Arts & Sciences, forming a new multidisciplinary initiative focused on the topic of “Race and Social Justice” as a line of inquiry in teaching and/or research. Qualifications

  • A PhD in philosophy or its equivalent that will be completed by the start of the appointment
  • A record of effective undergraduate teaching in philosophy
  • An emerging record of scholarship
  • An ability and willingness to serve the department, college, and university effectively
  • An ability and willingness to promote the Catholic, Jesuit educational mission of the university
  • An ability and willingness to participate actively in a multidisciplinary initiative focused upon the topic of “Race and Social Justice” as a line of inquiry in teaching and/or research

  • A statement (500 words) of teaching philosophy
  • Three letters of reference, at least two of which address the effectiveness of your teaching

 

Candidates who are selected for semifinalist interviews in December 2024 via Zoom video conference will be required to submit the following additional items:

 

  • Writing sample
  • Student evaluations of teaching
  • A statement (500 words) describing your potential contributions to Creighton’s mission (https://www.creighton.edu/about/mission-history)
  • A statement (500 words) describing how your line of inquiry in teaching and/or scholarly work is informed by the theme of “Race and Social Justice”
  • Original transcripts from each higher educational institution attended (photocopies acceptable at the time of initial application)
