Message from the Family Medicine OB Director

Image

Greetings and thank you for your interest in our program! Now, more than ever, family physicians are being called upon to provide comprehensive maternity care in underserved rural and urban communities. This unique fellowship was created in 2015 to provide family physicians the skills to serve these communities in need competently and develop their skills as faculty physicians.

The fellowship’s founding director, James F. Smith, MD, served as chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2011-2017, and he shepherded the development of this program within the Family Medicine Department under the supervision of Amy McGaha, MD.

The Fellowship is co-sponsored by CHI Health and Creighton University

The majority of labor and delivery experience occurs at CHI Health Immanuel Medical Center and CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center–Bergan Mercy under the supervision of board-certified OB-GYN physicians.

The fellowship is sponsored academically by Creighton University. Since the School of Medicine was founded in 1892, Creighton has dedicated significant time and effort to training and developing physicians. While fellows will undoubtedly graduate from the program with stellar obstetrical skills, scholarly activity under the supervision of experienced professors and faculty development as a teacher within the Department of Family Medicine are invaluable parts of this experience.

Our patients come from very diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Fellows can expect to develop strong skills in the management of routine and complicated pregnancies, to strengthen leadership skills, and to continue to develop as physicians dedicated to lifelong learning and service.

Everyone here is invested in your professional development and success.  Since our inception, our fellows have chosen many different practice models upon graduation including: Rural or Urban underserved practice, Private practice, Residency faculty, and Program Director.  Whatever path you decide to take, when you leave our program, you will be prepared to serve the pregnant and birthing people who need you most.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
