Protecting Campus

The Department of Public Safety is committed to a community policing philosophy in our daily operations, patrolling the campus 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Public Safety has primary responsibility for security enforcement, emergency management, campus safety and parking enforcement on the Creighton campus.

Non-emergency Line: 402.280.2104

  • The department is a non-sworn agency; when a sworn law enforcement response is required, local law enforcement agencies can respond. This includes the Omaha Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
  • Our officers are trained in CPR, AED and first aid. The Omaha Fire Department can respond to campus when emergency medical care is required.
  • Selected Public Safety officers are trained and certified to carry firearms under Nebraska Statute 28-1204.04, allowing us to provide a rapid armed response in the event of an active threat, and some officers carry oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray, commonly known as pepper spray. Officers also wear ballistic body armor in exterior vest carriers, following national best practices to ensure they can quickly and safely respond to active threats.
  • Within the Creighton community, we work closely with many student organizations and University offices on safety-related issues. Some of these organizations include: the Division of Student Life, the Office of Community Standards and Well-being, the Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance, the Violence Intervention and Prevention Center, Creighton Students Union and Inter Residence Hall Government.

How we handle emergency line calls

Calls made to the Creighton University Emergency Line (402.280.2911) go directly to the Public Safety Dispatcher. The dispatcher directs the activities and responses of on-duty officers and contacts local emergency responders as needed. Students and employees should report emergencies and criminal activity to this emergency line; non-emergency matters should be directed to 402.280.2104.

The safety and well-being of students, faculty and staff are primary considerations at Creighton University. Our Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is published in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and Violence Against Women Act. This report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes and fires, as well as institutional policies concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, fire safety, crime reporting, and other matters. The legislation seeks to make college campuses safer through the disclosure of such information—and to assist applicants when making enrollment or employment decisions based upon those criteria.

Creighton University encourages all members of the campus community to report crimes in a timely manner. To assist in this endeavor, the Clery Act requires colleges and universities to identify certain officials as campus security authorities (CSAs), to whom students and staff may report crimes. By virtue of their university responsibilities, CSAs are individuals who are designated to receive and report criminal incidents to the Department of Public Safety so they may be reviewed and published in the University’s Annual Security Report (ASR). CSAs are required to report Clery Act qualifying crimes occurring on campus, in public areas within or adjacent to campus, and in non-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University.

Including a variety of personnel in CSA roles acknowledges that some community members may be more likely to report incidents to university officials they know and trust. Occasionally, a person may want to seek assistance or report crimes anonymously or confidentially. Community members may report the incident to a designated CSA, and the CSA can provide the member with information and resources to obtain services and support. Once the confidential information is gathered, the CSA will forward it to Public Safety so it may be reviewed for inclusion in the ASR.

The Campus Security Authority Reporting Form should be used by only those identified as CSAs to report crimes that have come to their attention. This form allows the University to track the number of crimes occurring on university geography more accurately. It is important that crime statistics and information about campus safety are as clear and accurate as possible.

Creighton University has established policies to address the unlawful possession, use or distribution of alcohol or illicit drugs, as well as programs to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among students and employees. This is in accordance with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA) of 1989 (and its implementing regulations) as well as the Drug Free Workplace Act (DFWA). For more information, access Creighton's Drug Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA) Notification.
