For Lauren Burris, Creighton University has been more than just a place to earn a degree—it has been a place of self-discovery, leadership and personal transformation. Drawn to Creighton’s strong sense of community and commitment to both academic excellence and personal growth, she has embraced opportunities that have shaped her into a dedicated psychology and social work professional.
“From the moment I moved into my freshman dorm, I was welcomed by the values of service and compassion that define Creighton,” Lauren says. “My experiences here have not only pushed me to grow intellectually but have also deepened my understanding of empathy, connection and the importance of making a meaningful impact.”
Lauren’s passion for school psychology became clear during her junior year when she took a course that introduced her to the real-world applications of psychological principles in education. Engaging with graduate students, practicing school psychologists and conducting her own research, she found herself drawn to the field in a way that felt deeply personal.
“Taking that school psychology course not only deepened my understanding of the field but also solidified my commitment to it as my true calling,” she shares. “I quickly recognized how adding social work as a second major would not only enhance my professional expertise but also enrich my personal growth, equipping me to serve others with greater empathy and depth.”
Her decision to double major in psychology and social work was not made lightly. At one point, she considered graduating early but ultimately felt like she wasn’t ready to take that step. After deep discussions with professors and mentors, she realized that staying at Creighton and expanding her studies would better prepare her for the future.
“That decision has since become one of the best I’ve made,” Lauren says. “It has enriched both my personal and academic journey in ways I never imagined.”
Lauren credits several professors with shaping her journey, providing mentorship that guided her through challenges and decisions.
“Dr. Thomas Budesheim, my research advisor and the professor I have had the pleasure to be a teaching assistant for, has been an invaluable mentor and constant source of inspiration,” she says. “Professor Debra Schwiesow played a pivotal role in confirming that school psychology was the career I was meant to pursue, while Professor Monica White and Cathy Fox have been my steadfast guides, helping me navigate challenges personally and professionally.”
Beyond academics, Lauren has gained confidence, resilience and a deeper sense of purpose. “Since my first year at Creighton, my passion for learning has been reignited. I have been pushed to think more critically, explore new ideas and challenge my own assumptions.”
Lauren’s involvement in Union Pacific Diversity Scholars, Creighton University African American Student Association (CUASA), African Students Association (AFSA), Mental Health Peer Educators and the Sign Language Club has been instrumental in helping her find a sense of belonging and develop leadership skills.
“Being involved in different organizations has allowed me to build a strong sense of community,” she says. “Creighton has provided me with spaces where I can foster connection while actively engaging in activities that ignite my passions.”
Her practicum at Heart Ministry Center was especially transformative. As a case manager, she had the opportunity to work directly with individuals in need, gaining hands-on experience in navigating social services, advocating for clients and applying psychological research in real-world settings.
“My time at Heart Ministry Center has equipped me with invaluable tools that have strengthened my compassion for others,” she explains. “I have gained critical skills in navigating social services while leveraging my psychology research background to build a strong, evidence-based case for the changes that need to be made. This experience has sharpened my ability to advocate for those in need and reinforced my commitment to creating meaningful change.”

“My time at Creighton has been transformative, giving me knowledge, skills and the inner strength to face what’s ahead with confidence and purpose,” she says. “Creighton’s emphasis on cura personalis has instilled in me a responsibility to serve others with compassion and integrity.”
She hopes to carry the holistic approach Creighton has instilled in her into her future career. “As a school psychologist, my goal is to foster an environment where students feel truly supported and understood, empowering them to overcome emotional, behavioral and academic challenges.” When asked what advice she would give to her first-year self, Lauren offers these words of wisdom: “Your journey is uniquely yours. The meaningful relationships you cultivate and joy you find along the way will shine brighter than any obstacle. Continue to move forward with purpose, grace and faith in yourself—it’s not always about the destination. The beauty lies in who you become along the way.” From classroom discussions to hands-on service and research, Lauren Burris has embraced every opportunity Creighton has to offer. And as she looks toward her future, it’s clear that her impact—just like her journey—is only just beginning.
