At Creighton University, the Cortina Living-Learning Community offers students more than just a place to live—it provides a space to grow and engage with the world in a meaningful way. Designed for sophomores, this residential application-based program connects students’ passion for justice with their academic and personal goals.

For Jireth Galeana, a senior and Communications Chair of Cortina, joining the community was a natural choice. “I was inspired to join Cortina because of its emphasis on justice and community building, which aligns with my passion for working alongside others and addressing systemic inequities,” she shares. “Being part of Cortina has shaped my time at Creighton by giving me opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals, engage in meaningful service and deepen my understanding of social justice issues in a way that feels practical and impactful.”

Cortina members take part in service-learning experiences by partnering with local organizations to meet community needs. But service is only one component of the experience—reflection is equally crucial. “We regularly come together to discuss our experiences and what they reveal about broader social issues,” says Galeana. “Justice is promoted by encouraging critical conversations about equity and systemic challenges, helping members understand their roles in creating change both during and beyond their time in the program.”

The impact of Cortina extends beyond individual members, fostering deep connections with students, faculty and the greater Creighton community. “Cortina fosters a strong sense of belonging by creating spaces for honest conversations and shared experiences,” says Ciella Almazan, a former member. “I’ve developed close relationships with other students, faculty mentors and community partners who challenge and inspire me.”

For students considering joining Cortina, sophomore Remi Marealle advises coming in with an open mind. “Cortina will challenge you to think differently about yourself and the world around you, but it will also provide you with an incredibly supportive community.”

The lessons learned in Cortina don’t end with graduation. “Cortina has given me collaboration and critical thinking skills, as well as the ability to connect with others—skills that will serve me well in any field,” says Reza Moaddeli, a current sophomore. “It’s also deepened my commitment to justice and given me the confidence to pursue a career where I can advocate for others and work toward systemic change.”

Cortina puts Creighton’s mission into action, empowering students to engage with the world in a way that is both meaningful and transformative. The impact of this community does not just stay within the walls of the residence halls—it extends into these students’ futures, shaping the way they work for justice in the world.
