El Gato de Hojalata Colección Fábulas de Esopo

2012    ¿Quien le Pone el Cascabel al Gato?  Versión definitiva: Delia Maunás.  Ilustraciones: Roberto Regalado.  Paperbound. $7 from Christian Tottino, Argentina, through Bidstart, Nov., '14.

This eight-page oversized (7½" x 10¾") pamphlet is dramatic from start to finish.  The last image shows the rats scattering so fast that they leave a cloud behind.  Best image is the opening image of the cat grasping hords of rats at once.  The moral proclaims "Fácil es abrir la boca.  Difícil, hacer las cosas."  This is one of five pamphlets that Mr. Tottino was good enough to find for me.

2012 Los Tres Toros Amigos.  Versión definitiva: Delia Maunás.  Ilustraciones: Roberto Regalado.  Paperbound. $7 from Christian Tottino, Argentina, through Bidstart, Nov., '14.

This eight-page oversized (7½" x 10¾") pamphlet is dramatic, as is the whole series.  A curious feature of this particular number is that the visual presentation moves from showing the lion talking with one bull to the lion standing alone, apparently with all three bulls eaten.  There is no visual presentation of attacking or devouring -- or even of separation of one bull from another.  The moral is good: "Cuando el enemigo trata de separarnos, es para hacernos daño."  This is one of five pamphlets that Mr. Tottino was good enough to find for me.

2012 La Zorra y el Cuervo.  Versión definitiva: Delia Maunás.  Ilustraciones: Roberto Regalado.  Paperbound. $7 from Christian Tottino, Argentina, through Bidstart, Nov., '14.

This eight-page oversized (7½" x 10¾") pamphlet is dramatic from start to finish.  This crow steals grapes from some shepherds.  Each image highlights one of the two central characters.  The moral proclaims "Los piropos, muchas veces, son interesados."  This is one of five pamphlets that Mr. Tottino was good enough to find for me.

spaceholder: 2012 Fàbulas de Mayor a menor 4.  Versiones de Cecilia Blanco.  Ilustraciones de Chanti.  1a edición.  Paperbound.  Buenos Aires: Fàbulas de Mayor a menor:  Uranito Editores.  $9.86 from Amazon.com, Oct., '14.

Nacho reads to Tobi from this book -- in this number, on a camping trip.  The six fables here are LM, "The Horse and the Wolf," MSA, "The Monkey," FS, and "The Crow and the Peacock."  A full-page cartoon of them precedes each fable and follows the last fable.  The latter applies the moral in the daily life of Nacho and Tobi.  Those preceding a fable often have a relation to the fable itself.  "La Mona" is new to me.  It begins with this proverb: "Although the monkey is dressed in silk, she remains a monkey."  Many follow the female monkey dressed in silk, but does she know where she is going?  Chanti's best effort here may be the scene in which the Miller and his son carry the ass (23).  They do so with great effort!  This burro likes it, and he is angered on the next page when he has to walk on his own.  "Fun with fables" might be an apt subtitle for this series.  These cartoons and fables would engage a young reader.  Text and "ballooned" sayings in the illustrations complement each other in presenting the story.

2012 El Aguila y el Escarabajo.  Versión definitiva: Delia Maunás.  Ilustraciones: Roberto Regalado.  Paperbound. $9 from Christian Tottino, Argentina, through Bidstart, Oct., '14.

This eight-page oversized (7½" x 10¾") pamphlet is dramatic from start to finish.  It closes with the moral "There is no small enemy."  This medium uses color wonderfully to increase the dramatic effect.  The pamphlet has an unfortunate musty smell.

2012 La Araña y el Mosquito.

This fable is often known rather as "The Lion and the Mosquito."  Its strongest images are the final one and, even more, the slightly different presentation of the same scene on the cover.  The spider is ready to pounce on the trapped mosquito.  The moral is good: "Nos vence el enemigo más chiquito."  This is one of five pamphlets that Mr. Tottino was good enough to find for me.

2012 El León y el Ratón.  Versión definitiva: Delia Maunás.  Ilustraciones: Roberto Regalado.  Paperbound. $7 from Christian Tottino, Argentina, through Bidstart, Nov., '14.

This eight-page oversized (7½" x 10¾") pamphlet is dramatic from start to finish.  The book's four images give us the lion at four different moments.  The best image is the opening image of the lion, eyes popping out, grabbing the rat.  The moral is surprising: "No matter the reason, life always repays a good deed."  This is one of five pamphlets that Mr. Tottino was good enough to find for me.

2012 El Lobo y el Perro.  Versión definitiva: Delia Maunás.  Ilustraciones: Roberto Regalado.  Paperbound. $9 from Christian Tottino, Argentina, through Bidstart, Oct., '14.

This eight-page oversized (7½" x 10¾") pamphlet is dramatic from start to finish.  It closes with the question "Who chose better, the dog or the wolf?"  The wolf goes back into the words thinking that his relative the dog will never learn what it is to live.  This version of the story has the two encountering their respective "others" apparently for the first time.  This dog makes a point that he is tied up by the neck, not the paws.  The pamphlet has an unfortunate musty smell.

Will the series continue?
