The Garside Readers: The Cottage Press, By Alice H. Garside
1990/96 The Ant and the Duck. By Alice H. Garside. Pamphlet. Fourth Printing. Lincoln Center, MA: A TheatrePhonics Play: The Cottage Press. $2.25 from the publisher, Sept., '96.
An ant falls with a blade of grass into a pond and soon falls off the blade and into the pond itself. A duck picks up the desperate ant in his bill and brings him safe to the edge of the pond. The ant hopes to help the duck in a tough spot, but the latter says that he can take care of himself. A long time after that, some hunters scare up a number of ducks, including this one. The ant bites a hunter as he is about to shoot this duck. "One good turn deserves another" (16).
1990/96 The Dog and the Bone. By Alice H. Garside. Pamphlet. Fourth Printing. Lincoln Center, MA: The Garside Readers: The Cottage Press. $2.25 from the publisher, Sept., '96.
Jip crosses the log on a pond on his way home to eat a ham-bone he has found. He looks into the pond and sees a ham-bone five times as big as his. At this point the story is told differently. When he has lost his bone, Jip gets angry with the dog in the pond for stealing his bone and waits for the water to grow still. He barks to scare the dog he sees in the pond, but that dog has lost his bone too. He promises that the next time he will be content with his own bone.
1990/96 The Dog and the Wolf. By Alice H. Garside. Pamphlet. Fourth Printing. Lincoln Center, MA: The Garside Readers: The Cottage Press. $2.25 from From the publisher, Sept., '96.
When the wolf catches the dog at the gate and threatens to eat him, the dog advises the hungry wolf to let the dog fatten up before the wolf eats him. The wolf comes back later, only to find the dog safe on top of the shed. "Take what you can get when you can and do not hope for a bigger prize at a later date" (23).
1990/96 The Fox and the Stork. By Alice H. Garside. Pamphlet. Fourth Printing. Lincoln Center, MA: The Garside Readers: The Cottage Press. $2.25 from the publisher, Sept., '96.
FS is told in traditional fashion, with quite a bit of detail added. The two meals consist of chicken broth and pork jelly. She says that he gave her too much, and he says that he is not feeling well.
1990/96 The Fox and the Thrush. By Alice H. Garside. Pamphlet. Fourth Printing. Lincoln Center, MA: The Garside Readers: The Cottage Press. $2.25 from the publisher, Sept., '96.
This is a variation of FC. The fox gets the thrush to drop the grape she is about to eat by getting her to sing. An inserted bookmark advertises the book by using the art of Gerald Bryant, Grade 4, Lopez Elementary School.
1989/96 The Man, the Fox and the Skunk. By Alice H. Garside. Pamphlet. Fourth Printing. Lincoln Center, MA: The Garside Readers: The Cottage Press. $2.25 from the publisher, Sept., '96.
The story is new to me but worthy of a fable. A man digs a pit to catch a fox. The clever fox avoids it. As the man sleeps, a skunk instead falls into the trap. The man wakes up and is confident that he has caught a fox. When he approaches the trap, the skunk sprays him, and the scent clings to him. The pamphlet includes a "Teaching Suggestions" insert prepared by Jane Swett, proclaiming that "The Man, the Fox and the Skunk" is a fable and offering further resources and activities related to the story.
