Ballon: Il était une fois

2021 Il était une fois . . . Le Lièvre et la tortue; La Grenouille qui veut se faire aussi grosse que le boeuf.  Jean de La Fontaine.  Illustrated by Ailie Busby.  Paperbound.  Anvers, Belgium: Ballon: Standaard Uitgeverij.  €1.90 from Gibert Joseph, Paris, June, '22.

Here is an attractive and lively picture book telling of two fables for small children, with lively figures and La Fontaine's original text.  There is a fine expression on the face of the hare trying to catch victory at the end, having let it get away from him earlier.  The explosion of the frog is not shown; we go instead from her huge inflation to seeing her spread eagle on the ground.  The booklet represents a fine way to acquaint a child with these two great stories.  8¼" square.

2021 Il était une fois . . . Le Loup et l'Agneau; La Cigale et la Fourmi.  Jean de La Fontaine.  Ailie Busby.  Pamphlet.  Anvers, Belgium: Ballon: Standaard Uitgeverij.  €2.99 from Gibert Joseph, Paris, June, '23.

Here is another attractive and lively picture book telling two fables for small children, with lively figures and La Fontaine's original text.  Wolf and lamb are suitably contrasted to fit their attitudes.  Busby pays special attention to characters' eyes.  As to GA, Busby begins with the grasshopper in her tidy, rather large kitchen discovering that she is out of food.  I have usually pictured the grasshopper rather living out in the open and deprived of shelter.  The ant too lives in a little human house.  I have to admit that La Fontaine's text says nothing about shelter.  The booklet represents a fine way to acquaint a child with these two great stories.  8¼" square.

2021 Il était une fois . . . Le Rat de Ville et le Rat des Champs…Le Corbeau et le Renard.  Jean de La Fontaine.  Illustrated by Ailie Busby.  Pamphlet.  Anvers, Belgium: Ballon: Standaard Uitgeverij.  €2.99 from Gibert Joseph, Paris, June, '23.

Here is yet another attractive and lively picture book telling two fables for small children, with lively figures and La Fontaine's original text.  The two mice are nicely contrasted here, right down to skin color and bowtie versus bandana.  This country mouse, by contrast with many other illustrators' work, has bread, cheese, and whole fruits in a lovely little home with pots and pans.  The fox in FC runs away with the wedge of cheese under his arm.  The booklet represents a fine way to acquaint a child with these two great stories.  8¼" square.
