Supporting Accessibility for Students and Employees

Creighton University is committed to meeting not only the requirements, but also the spirit of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and its amendments. The University believes in a culture of openness, a supportive educational and work environment, and the promotion of equality and reasonable accommodation for employees and students with disabilities. Accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis, and information on how to receive them is included below.

Disability and Reasonable Accommodation

The ADA defines a disability as (I) a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more of an individual's major life activities; (II) a record of such impairment; or (III) being regarded as having such an impairment. Reasonable accommodation for disability may include (but is not limited to):

  • Modifying existing facilities
  • Acquiring or modifying equipment or devices
  • Adjusting or modifying examinations, training materials or policies
  • Providing qualified readers or interpreters

Employee accommodation may also include:

  • Job restructuring
  • Modifying work schedules
  • Reassignment to a vacant position

If you need an accommodation, contact the Office of Student Accessibility Services. You will first complete a needs assessment and provide documentation of your disability. Then the office will work with you to determine the best solution for your needs. Many factors will be considered when determining a reasonable accommodation, including the nature of the disability and the type of activities you will be engaged in at Creighton.

Note that if the necessary changes would pose an "undue hardship" on Creighton University, the University is permitted to refuse a request for an accommodation. Undue hardship is defined as an action requiring significant difficulty or expense when considered in light of factors such as an organization's size, financial resources, and the nature and structure of its operation. An organization is not required to lower quality or production standards to make an accommodation; nor is an organization obligated to provide personal use items such as glasses or hearing aids.

If you need an accommodation, please contact Human Resources directly. The University encourages employees to self-identify if they believe they may have accessibility-related needs. All discussions between employees, their supervisors, Human Resources personnel, and Accessibility, Accommodation and Awareness Committee members will be considered confidential to the full extent practicable.

Reporting a Barrier or Grievance

If you experience an environmental or other accessibility barrier, we encourage you to report the barrier. If you experience harassment or discrimination because of a disability or are denied approved accommodations, contact the Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance.

About the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act

The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, State and local government, public accommodations, commercial facilities, transportation, and telecommunications. It also applies to the United States Congress.

The Rehabilitation Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs receiving federal financial assistance and in the employment practices of federal contractors. Section 504 of this act specifies that “No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States…shall, solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance…” – 29 U.S.C. § 794(a).

Each federal agency has its own set of Section 504 regulations, but all include reasonable accommodation for employees with disabilities, program accessibility, effective communication for individuals who have hearing or vision disabilities, and accessible new construction. Individuals with concerns or questions about accommodations should contact Student Accessibility Services (students) or Human Resources (employees). Individuals who wish to report concerns may contact Creighton’s Section 504 Coordinator.

Creighton, our partners, and users of our services deploy cookies, the following few sections describe what are cookies, how they are used and your options for controlling cookies.

WHAT ARE COOKIES?

Cookies are small pieces of data, stored in text files, that are stored on your computer or other device when websites are loaded in a browser. They are widely used to “remember” you and your preferences, either for a single visit (through a “session cookie”) or for multiple repeat visits (using a “persistent cookie”). They ensure a consistent and efficient experience for visitors, and perform essential functions such as allowing users to register and remain logged in. Cookies may be set by the site that you are visiting (known as “first party cookies”), or  by third parties, such as those who serve content or provide advertising or analytics services on the website (“third party cookies”). Websites may also contain other tracking technologies such as “pixels.” These are typically small transparent images that provide Creighton with statistics, for similar purposes as cookies. They are often used in conjunction with cookies, though they are not stored on your computer in the same way. As a result, if you disable cookies, pixels may still load, but their functionality will be restricted.
