Modern Languages
As part of the College of Arts and Sciences, the department provides a program of study conducive to developing competence in the spoken and written language, and a knowledge of the literatures and cultures of the target languages. We teach variety of language courses at many levels, including language for the professions and academic service learning. We endeavor to educate students in the value of engaging in service to the larger community at home and abroad in the target languages. Our courses are marked by excellence in teaching and are sustained and enhanced by on-going scholarship and service. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures strives within its courses and study abroad programs to:
- broaden the students’ perspective of the world while fostering awareness and appreciation for diversity
- offer new insights into the issues, events, ideas, and values which abound in the human experience of all cultures
- help students correlate the present with the past, and one’s own language and culture with the languages and cultures of others
- involve students in both critical and creative thinking as they respond to the work of authors, musicians, and artists of other languages and cultures
