The Creighton University Department of Public Safety is headquartered in the west end of the Schneider Building at 2222 Burt Street. Visitors to Public Safety can park in Lot 38, which is located on the west side of 23rd Street, just north of Burt Street.
The Department of Public Safety protects and serves the Creighton community through proactive patrolling, rapid response, community outreach, security technology, and safe transportation options. We seek to ensure that all members of our community can live, learn, work, and play in a safe and secure environment.
The safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff are primary considerations at Creighton University. The Creighton University Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is published in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and Violence Against Women Act. This report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes and fires, as well as institutional policies concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, fire safety, crime reporting, and other matters. This legislation seeks to make college campuses safer through the disclosure of such information, and to assist applicants in making enrollment or employment decisions based upon that criteria. You may download a copy of this report by accessing the following website:
You may also obtain a free paper copy of the report at the Public Safety office at 2222 Burt Street, Omaha, NE 68178, or by contacting Public Safety at 402.280.2104.
The department is led by Assistant Vice President Michael D. Reiner. Our team includes 3 shift supervisors, 3 shift lead officers, 18 officers, 3 full-time dispatchers, and 3 part-time dispatchers. Public Safety has primary responsibility for security enforcement, emergency management, campus safety, and parking enforcement on the Creighton campus. The department is a non-sworn agency. Local law enforcement agencies, including the Omaha Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff's Office can respond to campus when a sworn law enforcement response is required. Our officers are trained on CPR, AED, and first aid. The Omaha Fire Department can respond to campus when emergency medical care is required.
Public Safety is committed to a community policing philosophy in our daily operations, patrolling the campus 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Public Safety works closely with the Division of Student Life, the Office of Community Standards and Wellbeing, the Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance, the Violence Intervention and Prevention Center, Creighton Students Union, Inter Residence Hall Government, and many other University offices and student organizations on safety-related issues.
Calls made to the Creighton University Emergency Line (402.280.2911) go directly to the Public Safety Dispatcher. The dispatcher directs the activities and responses of on-duty officers and contacts local emergency responders, as needed. Students and employees should report emergencies and criminal activity to Public Safety at 402.280.2911. Non-emergency calls should be directed to 402.280.2104.
Creighton University encourages all members of the campus community to report crimes on a timely basis. To assist in this endeavor, the Clery Act requires colleges and universities to identify certain officials as campus security authorities (CSAs), to whom students and staff may report crimes. CSAs are individuals who, by virtue of their University responsibilities, are designated to receive and report criminal incidents to the Department of Public Safety so they may be reviewed and published in the University’s Annual Security Report (ASR). Under the Clery Act, CSAs are required to report Clery Act qualifying crimes occurring on campus, in public areas within or adjacent to campus, and in non-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University.
Including a variety of personnel in CSA roles acknowledges that some community members may be more likely to report incidents to University officials whom they know and trust. Occasionally, a person may want to seek assistance or report crimes anonymously or confidentially. Community members may report the incident to a designated CSA, and the CSA can provide the member with information and resources to obtain services and support. Once the confidential information is gathered, the CSA will forward it to Public Safety so it may be reviewed for inclusion in the ASR.
The Campus Security Authority Reporting Form should only be used by those identified as CSAs to report crimes that have come to their attention. This form allows the University to track the number of crimes occurring on University geography more accurately. It is important that crime statistics and information about campus safety are as clear and accurate as possible.

The Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA) of 1989 and its implementing regulations, as well as the Drug Free Workplace Act (DFWA), require colleges and universities to establish policies to address the unlawful possession, use or distribution of alcohol or illicit drugs, and programs to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among students and employees.
