Children and Vulnerable Adults
Protections for all.
Creighton University adopted the Children and Vulnerable Adults Policy to ensure that departments, student organizations, and outside groups have adequately prepared for the supervision and responsibility of working with children and vulnerable adults. This policy applies to programs and events both on and off-campus where children or vulnerable adults are the target audience.
Who are defined as children or vulnerable adults?
Children are minors under the age of 19 and vulnerable adults are adults with a substantial functional or mental impairment.
What is required for an organization, department, or program to offer an activity or event intended for children or vulnerable adults?
This policy requires the program or activity to be registered with the University and that each employee, volunteer, or representative successfully complete required training and a background check as needed. This must all be completed prior to the start of the program or activity for the individual to be authorized.
Step 1: Register and receive approval of the program or activity by completing the online registration form.
- This form must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the date of the program/activity
Step 2: You will receive an email from the Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance following a review of your form.
- The office will request a list of all participants (names and NetIDs) in an excel spreadsheet or word document, so please have this ready in advance.
Step 3: The Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance will assign online training to all participants or verify that participants have completed children and vulnerable adult training within the last calendar year.
- Online training will be available through "Get Inclusive" our online training vendor.
Step 4: The Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance will determine if your participants will need background checks for participation with your event. The Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance will assist in facilitating background checks (charged to your department or organization) or assist in identifying approved vendors to complete background checks.
Step 5: The Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance will notify you of participants who are approved to participate with your event. Individuals who do not complete requirements with the Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance are not eligible to participate.
All individuals working with children and/or vulnerable adults must complete an annual required training. Training for Creighton faculty, staff, and students is now completed through Bridge.
Online training procedures:
- If you are part of a program or event being registered through the Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance, your name and NetID will be provided to the Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance. You will be signed up for "Child Abuse Prevention" training. If your program or activity works with vulnerable adults you may receive a different training from the Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance.
- You will receive a direct email from Get Inclusive with a link in the email to your training. The link is specific to you and should not be shared or forwarded to other individuals.
- You must complete the training in its entirety to receive credit for the training. The Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance will verify your completion within the Get Inclusive system.

The Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance offers "Safe Environments" training for faculty, staff, and students doing service with the Archdiocese of Omaha. Safe Environments training is a requirement of the Archdiocese of Omaha for all adults volunteering with a Parish or with an area school. The Creighton online training does not fulfill the Archdiocese requirement.
Individuals must attend an in-person training (approximately 2-3 hours) and complete a background check to be certified through the Archdiocese. Certification is good for 5 years and after that time, individuals can complete an online refresher training to renew their certification.
